The problem is, every time I go to a store to add a little pick me up to my wardrobe, the stores somehow forget that we are living in a high mountain climate. They offer tank tops paired with linen pants or skirts. We experience winter for most of the year. A good six months at the very least. Hello?! We need warmth for another two months at the very minimum. And that is pushing it. So how does one take their love of fresh fashion through to the Spring when our temperatures are still hovering around freezing?

My philosophy at this point in time during the year is that fashion rules need not apply. We have been wearing bulk for long enough to make the fashion minutia disappear. If you want to wear pastels- wear them. If you feel the need for white pants- wear them. Care not what others think, or about the Memorial Day rule. If you need a spring in your step, give yourself that freedom. Let’s face it- if you saw someone wearing a pair of white jeans paired with a camel colored sweater coat with great boots, you would think she looked great. You would think she had, what I like to call, fashion chutzpa. The gumption to wear what is different, yet timely with the season.

Spring fever fashion can be the most fun and creative of all. We are all longing for shorts weather, but still need to deal with long underwear. Now is the time to pull out all stops. I have a few pairs of pants that remain my favorite for this time of year. Kelly green and baby blue. Both of these sit in my closet all winter after having had a great summer. When I open the doors, I am inspired by color. And a long time ago, I decided not to worry. One day I put on my baby blue trousers paired with a black cashmere turtleneck and black boots. And you know what? It worked. I got to add a bit of Spring into the dreary winter wardrobe I was so accustomed to. And the best part of it- I got more compliments that day than most. Why? Because. I bucked convention and added a special color to the normal blah and got to play with Spring.

This is also a great time of year to pull out the skirts and dresses and start showing some leg. And why not? Our legs are looking great! We are all in excellent skier shape and have some shape to show. Whether the skirt is long or short, tights, a sweater and some boots are all you need. The shorter the skirt, the thicker the tights, while we long for Spring it is still winter, so protect those glamorous gams. If you so choose, a great pair of thigh-high socks are a fantastic pre-spring investment. They add the warmth of a leg warmer without the horrific flashback to a time when fashion lost all reason. They are cute, sexy and quite sassy for those who dare.
I also believe in layering. For those of us longing to expose skin and actually purchase some of the cute t-shirts we see in the stores today, a long-sleeved t-shirt underneath is all you need. The best staple is white. My favorite place for T-shirts is Target. The lingerie section has perfect tissue cotton Tees. They are a perfect weight for layering. Not really great for by themselves since they are see-through… unless you long for the days of cheesy Madonna… and can be yours for about five bucks. I live in my layered t-shirts and generally do all winter.

The most important thing this time of year is to keep looking forward to spring time fashion, but don’t let the winter blues get you down. Be creative, be different, and be careless. Don’t worry about fashion rules- just figure out what works for you and do it. A ¾ sleeved sweater with nautical stripes and great wool pants. A black wrap dress with just about anything. A white tank, loose fitting khakis and a black wool cardigan. Mix and match the weight of the fabrics, use color and enjoy. Try a black blazer with a pink boatneck T-shirt paired with black wool slacks. The list goes on and on. Purchase a few key items to spruce up the closet and be set. The Valley Girl shopping list looks something like this:

2 white layering tees from Target
2 pairs of warm black tights. One wool, one lycra.
One white button down cotton shirt.
One really cute denim or khaki mini skirt.
A cute printed t-shirt or two.
One black wrap dress.
One pair of colored pants.
A great lightly colored belt…white or tan.

These pieces will carry you through. They can go with each other, or they can add to your current wardrobe with not a lot of effort, but a great amount of style.

Make spring fever fashion fun. It can be tricky, but is very rewarding when done right. Keep looking forward. The warm weather is not too far away.
